A fantastic alternative to the monotony of the motorway and not any slower either. Have done this route several times in both directions - very little other traffic and have never seen a Smokey

We rode this route from the A75 turnoff of the A74 all the way via the B7078 nearly to Glasgow and it was so much more than the A74 and just as fast over all in getting to the north fo Scotland. There are some very good sweeping bends and good long straights. Beware of the sudden appearence of a roundabout just before Abingdon. Did not see one police vehicle all the way up to Glasgow. We will always use this route when going to Scotland from now on. Used in conjunction with the A6 from Kendal it made what is usually a boring run up the M6 into a very enjoyable run.

If you really want an interesting variant on the M74, try this. We did the rest of this road from the services in the North, Happendon (just south of Glasgow), down through Abington and onto Gretna, across the River Esk, then headed down to Penrith to finish. All the way down it runs alongside the motorway, almost totally devoid of traffic, gives fantastic views and great riding.

We had just had a great weekend in Scotland and I wanted to try this, as an alternative, on good advice. What roads - starts in the North as the B7078 then becomes the B7076, the M74, M6, then the A6 to Penrith. As it is now the old road north the motorway gets all the traffic and this one is virtually abandoned, but with a perfect road surface. We kept up an (illegal, think about) average speed of a mile a minute, 60mph. We noted we had ridden 90 miles in 93 minutes, just enough to exhaust a tank of gas (Ducatis you know...). Even though the road is not continuous (there are several roundabouts, some small villages and a few junctions to negotiate) it is open, safe, enjoyable and quick. We were putting together some linked corners at very fast speeds indeed. If you just want an alternative (to the motorway) bimble north or south its well worth doing and will not cost you much time. If you want a great biking road......just do it. Recommended.
