We took in this route as part of a bigger loop from Chamonix, through the Mont-Blanc Tunnel across the Col and back through the D902/D925/D218b etc back to Chamonix. Couldnt have asked for a better day and the ride was awesome. Going back this year, but this time we plan to start on the Col du Grand-Saint-Bernard and do both in the same day.
Great route but too many traffic :( Some photos also added.
Blew my mind here in July 2005. Awesome, scary, fantastic. If you do the alps, do this road. It is like nothing else you will be better once ridden each way. Some of the poorest road surfaces I've ever been on (so what). Some of the bends have 2,000ft drops (very scary) Incredible... Just keep going, then come back 60 miles, the other side on the mountain is just as good. I want to go back!! You will too!!!
My wife and I did this route last year and it was FANTASTIC :-) The route was great and the views and stunning, we hope to go back next year and do it again but spend a little more time having a look around. As stated the roads in Italy are worse than the French side BUT if your out for the views and not the speed factor then its great :-)
Fantastically scenic route with too many bends to count and views of Mont Blanc. The surface on the Italian side is not good, but at least there are Armco barriers, which disappear on the French side. The Italian bends are very tight, alot of hairpins, but the French ones are more open. There was some snow around near the top even in June.
