Augustus 17, 2015 -

One of the best and most overlooked roads in north Wales. Equally pleasing to ride in either direction. Some open fast sweeping corners and some technical sections. Great fun on anything with two wheels and an engine.

This route can easily link to Nant-y-Garth pass with a shortcut that takes you through Pwllglas and deliberately avoids Ruthin.


Caution: This route takes you through a managed forest. Beware of large, very slow moving timber lorries that pull on to the main road from (sometimes hidden) forest access roads.

Police mobile camera van is occasionally positioned at the Ruthin end of Clawwdd-newydd just inside the 30 mph zone.

I love this road as a nice trundle into N Wales. First rode it in 1987
and always use it when heading down from home in the North West. Some places are a bit iffy surface wise, and there are some farms, so dont go too nuts. But all in all, another little hidden gem.

Its a high-level B-road through farming country, so keep up the concentration. Tree-shaded twisties as you climb out of Ruthin, then switchback straights and easy bends through forests followed by open country with dry-stone walls as crash barriers (not) if you get out of shape. Watch out for crud on the road left by Dai the Tractor, and even though you can see the sharp left-hander as you approach the pub downhill in Llanfihangel, take care: one false move and youll be stuffed into the lounge bar.
Local plod on duty tend to concentrate on the Denbigh Moors road or the A5, but beware, its a favourite for the BikeSafe runs. Meet two bikes together going fast-ish and the big one bringing up the rear may well be an off-duty copper sharing his wisdom.
