Came through here in 2006 on a tour of the southern states went to the cafe in Vesuvius, had a chem bog for a dunny! was a bit worried when banjos started playing!!!
I just rode the whole 500 mile Skyline Drive/Blue Ridge Parkway route and its fantastic. Beautiful road surface, nicely maintained: lots of grip. Excellent combination of straights and turns, uphill, downhills, and (drum roll) during the week it does not appear to be patrolled for the entire 500 mile length into North Carolina. That said, theres tons of wildlife, deer, bears and other smaller, squishier characters including lots of seniors in slow moving Chevrolets who have a hard time seeing the yellow line around the infinite number of blind turns and difficulty reacting to anything moving faster than growing grass, so maybe the route doesnt need much patrolling to keep a nutters speed down.
Map doesn't show very clearly but take the 56 to the Blue Ridge Parkway between Steeles Tavern and Swannanoa (nr Waynesboro), some good twisties here.
