The roads and scenery only become interesting after Geraldine. This is the quickest way to get there out of Christchurch. Main road can get busy so this is the quickest back road. Flat, straight and rather boring but if you get to Geraldine quickly you have more time to enjoy what lies ahead. Care needs to be taken in the shadows cast by the shelter belts as they can still be icy even at mid day
