Better done west to east especially in the evening. Try the DN7 to Frejus and back along the coast on the sea side of the road. One of my favourites
I liked this road. From the sea front in Cannes at one end, it follows the jagged mediterranean coastline with predictably beautiful and challenging results. Catch a lot of dawdling tourist traffic and it will be no fun at all. Get a reasonably clear run, as I did, and its spectacular. Its interspersed with lots of habitation related speed limits, and a plethora of scenic overlooks (which means drivers doing stupid things and looking at things other than the road while they do them) but its definitely a top, top biking road. Film shows a section of the road, heading west from Cannes
One of my very favourite rides in France. As already mentioned it can be extremely busy in high season which makes progress a tad slow. My tip would be to ride it early on a saturday or sunday morning, on the road at 7.30am you will have it virtually to yourself apart from a few fit cyclists. With the sun up and the fantastically blue med crashing over the Massif desterel red rock it will lift your spirits and get your day off to the best start. Between Miramar and Theoule sur Mer there is a good coffee stop on the right hand side, a great place for an espresso and croissant with the most amazing views across the med.
I prefer to ride St Maxime to Cannes as I will be on the sea side of the road. Out of season is best.
From the outskirts of Cannes down to St Raphael the road is superb - classic twisty Mediteranian coastal road. I've seen this road used in several magazine road tests and it's great fun - not that fast, but very twisty. Best done on an evening during the summer - the traffic can be very heavy during the daytime. The section past St Raphael isn't quite as good, and if you go further south towards St Tropez the traffic is horrendous!
Cannes to Frejus excellent ,bend after bend good grip slow to average speed bends (no sweepers) left right left right all the time, me and the lads go to France for this road (the best scratchin road in France) *police station at start of road in Cannes*
one of my favourites which i've done on two and four wheels and it's fun by both!
The environment here is wonderful and the road winds and twists along the coast of the French riveria. Can be some tourist traffic but it shouldn't prevent you enjoying it.
