Eidsvåg - Sunndalsøra via Eikesdalen

Start off with nice curves to Eresfjord. Spectacular road along Eikesdalsvannet (quite some tunnels) leading to fantastic Eikesdalen with the waterfall Mardøla. Extreme climb making Trollstigen look pale with nice scenery over the mountain (gravel road). Trip down Litldalen to Sunndalsøra is also stunning.

From the verdant meadows and the lush cultural landscape of Bøverdalen you can catch a glimpse of towering mountains in the far distance, as the road slowly ascends through the valley. It makes its way up to the summit at 1,434 metres, making the road northern Europe’s highest mountain pass. From the starting point in Lom, your expectations rise even before you drive out of the small village. Not every tourist route provides such a natural dramatic setting with a profusion of powerful impressions. Along the road you will be tempted to stop at the viewing points to soak in the beauty of the natural surroundings. At the Mefjellet stop you will find Knut Wold’s stone sculpture which allows us to view the mountain landscape from a different perspective. Continuing down towards the Sognefjord the mountain region appears untamed. Where the Hurrungane massif towers up to the heavens the mountains suddenly open up and the landscape changes once again. Towards Gaupne, the final point on this stretch, the road descends to skirt the beautiful Sognefjord whose clear waters change colour from green to blue in tune with the light and the weather. What should you do when you arrive? Relax and let your impressions sink in. Some people turn and drive the same way back, and are surprised to see how different everything is. Although everything is the same, it’s as if you see the surroundings anew.

The 108-kilometer section across Sognefjellet, known as Sognefjellsvegen, is designated a National Tourist Route. (http://www.nasjonaleturistveger.no/en/routes/sognefjellet)
The road reaches the highest altitude on the public road network in Norway, 1434 m, and it is closed every winter.

Some would argue that this road is exceptional. It would be with better surface. It takes you past a Summer skiing resort.

Private toll road (as of 2014 the charge for Motorcycle was NOK100). At the peak one can see the Geiranger fjord 1500 metres below. The ride up there is great. Oh, and it is very fun to pass the tourist buses, seeing how the people onboard just can't believe their eyes.

This route (also entered as part of a roundtrip) is truly spectacular. It takes you past the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Geiranger fjord, the Ørnevei (Eagles road) and Trollstigen (Troll ladder), and lots lots more. Beware of tourists, and locals racing to catch the ferry. Bring your camera!

Gaularfjellet

Sor-Trondelag/More og Rom... > Norway > Europe
August 6, 2012 - 3 star route rating Motorcycle Road3.0
A serene journey passing protected rivers, waterfalls and a tranquil fjord. The road runs along an arm of the worlds longest fjord, the Sognefjord, before curving up the steep slopes to the mountain. Further on, the road follows the protected Gaula river system, which is famous for its many waterfalls, but also has white-water rapids and tranquil mountain lakes.

Trails have been laid along selected stretches of the river to provide better access to the waterfalls, which are well worth seeing. Here, children and adults can enjoy trout fishing at its best, and wander along well-maintained trails by waterfalls and rapids. There are boats for hire, but those who prefer to hike through the mountains also have plenty of opportunities. The tourist centre in Balestrand is a good point of departure for day trips, and the boat ride to Fjærland with its Glacier Museum is a splendid way to explore nature in this locality.

National Tourist Route Gaularfjellet from Balestrand to Eldalsosen and Moskog and from Eldalsosen to Sande has a total length of 130 kilometres.

The stretch between Mel and Mjell on the Gaularfjellet plateau is closed during the winter season. http://www.nasjonaleturistveger.no/en/gaularfjellet

Rv63 Dalsnibba

Sor-Trondelag/More og Rom... > Norway > Europe
August 9, 2010 - 5 star route rating Motorcycle Road5.0
Superb mountain crossing, only open during the Summer months. Do yourself a favour and take time for the detour up to Dalsnibba peak, for panoramic views.

The clean and fresh mountain lakes look inviting, and probably would be if they were a bit warmer or if you e an ice-swimmer.

When you get to Geiranger stay at the Union hotel. Its a great experience to swim in the pool while enjoying the view of the fjord. There are many good routes for hikes in the mountains, and lots of activities in Geiranger (kayaking, boat-rides, etc).

Also you might enjoy the local dessert - Svele. Its a kind of pancake, often served with sweet butter.
